What It Does & How It Works
MBR systems integrate biological treatment with membrane separation, combining activated sludge process with ultrafiltration or microfiltration membranes for enhanced treatment performance. The technology maintains high mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations, typically 8,000-12,000 mg/L, enabling superior biological treatment in compact reactor volumes. Immersed membrane modules provide physical barrier separation, eliminating the need for secondary clarification while producing high-quality effluent suitable for reuse applications. The system operates through cyclic aeration and suction processes, where air scouring prevents membrane fouling while vacuum draws permeate through membrane pores.
Advanced control systems monitor dissolved oxygen, sludge age, and transmembrane pressure to optimise biological performance and membrane operation. The technology achieves superior removal of suspended solids, BOD, COD, and nutrients compared to conventional activated sludge systems. Membrane cleaning protocols including relaxation, backwashing, and chemical cleaning maintain long-term performance.
